Let me take a few moments to introduce myself and my experiences:
- I attended and graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College (now a university) and UNC Greensboro (both my master's and Ph.D.).
- I have worked as a teacher in the NC Community College system for over 30 years.
- I have been an academic leader for about 15 years (I was the Dean of Arts and Sciences before I retired).
- I have made numerous professional presentations; most recently I have presented from coast to coast (e.g San Diego, CA in 2012 and Philadelphia, PA in 2013) on the generational differences we are seeing across our culture.
- I am now in my second year here at TMSA and appreciate this opportunity to work with you students and your parents.
- I am 100% committed to you students and your success.
Figurative Language
I have told students for many years that I can identify a handful of figurative language terms (e.g. metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and so forth) after listening to them talk for five minutes. So just as a reminder: view this video for reference and recall, particularly those of you enrolled in English III and IV!
Transitional Words and Phrases
Transitional words and phrases work to connect your ideas together. This "connection" is critical for your readers because the reader is not with you when he/she reads your writing. The reader cannot ask you, "How does this connect up?" So consider this little video to help you remember how to "connect" your writing! To view this video, just click this blue text here.

Please click below to see this CNN, "Last Look" segment from Sunday 24 January 2016. This clip is particularly compelling for today's high school students since the world described was made by your parents and grand parents. And, whether you like this video or not, YOU are going to have to develop your skills set to DEAL with these issues left to you by those who have preceeded you. Please watch carefully and thoughfully.
